Sony BMG Music Entertainment now releases its new titles on CDs protected with digital rights management (DRM) software. DRM
dictates which file formats can be used to digitally copy the music, as well as, how many copies can be made, and wouldn't you know that MP3 is not one of them. (EMI Music is on its way to also implementing such a standard of practice.) > The copy-protected discs work exclusively with software and devices compatible with Microsoft Windows Media technology.
> Apple -- the leader in digital music -- has resisted the FairPlay DRM for use on the copy-protected discs.
Some musicians (
Dave Matthews Band, Foo Fighters and Switchfoot) (upon receiving compliants) have given their fans information on how to circumnaviagte these technologies.
How to instructions:
+
iPod users can rip the CD into a Windows Media file,
- then
burn the tracks onto a blank CD (without copy protection) and
-
then rip that CD back into iTunes.
